Biomaterials are a forward-thinking and necessary alternative to conventional, fossil-based materials. Made from renewable resources, they integrate seamlessly into natural cycles, fostering new life rather than depleting resources. The Disruptive Biomaterials research group envisions a future where materials exist in harmony with biological systems.
We design practical applications and use cases for and with biomaterials across various industries and develop innovative materials in collaboration with the scientific community. Through tangible prototypes and compelling storytelling, the possibilities of a material world in balance with nature become not just imaginable, but achievable.

Open-source tools offer a new approach to traditional production by fostering accessibility, experimentation, and decentralized manufacturing. At Disruptive Tools, we develop open-source infrastructures and digital tools that enable designers, researchers, and artisans to create their own textiles and explore new materials.
As an interdisciplinary initiative bridging design, technology, and sustainability, we challenge conventional methods and advocate for a circular textile economy. Through modular machine development and material research, we empower communities to innovate, collaborate, and engage with textile production in an independent way. By making technology open and accessible, we enable a new understanding about textile creation.

Every day, we are surrounded by a multitude of fabrics in very different contexts and functions. The choice of material in combination with processing and technique creates an infinite number of possibilities for how and where textiles are used. Textiles are on the one hand an ancient testimony of our culture(s) and on the other hand a real technology of the future.
Currently, the textile industry is undergoing major changes due to globalization and growing sustainability demands while remaining a traditional sector with regional influence. Disruptive Textiles takes a closer look at spaces, tools and methods we need to bring young ideas and long-standing know-how together to initiate new strategic collaborations and enable disruptive textile innovation processes as well as cultural investigations.
